Using video to represent users

Friday, December 16th, 2005

A recent HCI / UCD project of mine has been to examine different ways of describing the user of a software product – so called “personas”. My focus was to examine whether representing the user with video instead of text would allow the developers to engage more in the lifes of the user. The amount [...]

Agile methods caught in popularity trap?

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

I gave a talk on combining UCD tools with iterative development methodologies like XP at a HCI conference yesterday. My main focus was that UCD tools needs to be incorporated into software methodologies in order for UCD tools to be more widely used.
Most can agree that we need to bring the user to the center [...]

Speaking on HCI and iterative development

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

On tuesday, I will attend the 5th HCI research symposium, where I will speak on combining personas (HCI) with iterative development methodologies – namely XP. After my presentation, I will participate in a panel debate with CBS professors Lene Nielsen, Torkil Clemmesen and others. If it is of any interest for you, then check [...]

Component-based vs. customized web sites

Thursday, October 27th, 2005
If not can you [...] try to find an existing tool because from what i know there are so many that it would be a waste of time to program one ourselves What do you reply to a statement like that from a client? I see two extremes: the component based website, where all functionality (messageboard, [...]

Going back to PHP

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

Recently I sweared to myself that I wasn’t going back to PHP ever again, as I have gotten comfortable using Ruby on Rails. I guess I will have to swollow those words, as it seems I’m going back to PHP for a while. A programming job that gives me the chance to contribute to like [...]

Real personas

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

The whole idea of using personas is to create a specific fictional character, that allows the designers and developers to explore the problem domain. One of Cooper’s points is not to use descriptions of real-life people, as theese do not contain enough aspects to describe all the design-challenges in the problem domain. According to Cooper, [...]

Too much creative writing

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

I recently sent a reduced-size paper about combining UCD and XP to a HCI/systems development conference. The first draft I sent out was created in a copy-paste manner from a larger paper, as an approaching deadline of the conference made it impossible for me to rewrite the paper into something that was actually fluent. So [...]

Removing documentation from Personas

Thursday, September 15th, 2005

It is my quest and declared goal to remove as much documentation as possible when using personas and scenarios. Something is missing in agile development, and I believe the two UCD methods have much the missing in them that traditional agile development can learn from.
The developers shouldn’t be bothered with piles of documentation – neither [...]

Are scenarios just requirement specifications?

Wednesday, September 14th, 2005

I have before argued that it should be the scenarios that were specific in functionality and not the pesonas. That statement needs elaboration, as scenarios are much more than a list of requirements. If it was only a list of requirements, then why even consider mixing it with iterative development.
Using scenarios is a tool for [...]
